The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia has listed guest places on Wild Oats XI, Skandia, Ichi Ban and Andrew Short Marine Shockwave 5 for its SOLAS Big Boat Challenge on Tuesday 16 December 2008. Commodore Matt Allen's Ichi Ban leads IRC Division 1 in Kings Cup 2008, Thailand

In IRC 1 Class, Allen's Beneteau First 44.7 Ichi Ban leads the series after an impressive record of handicap wins in all races. In second place is Rob Bottomley's Beneteau First 47.7 Sailplane, followed by Ben Copley's Swan CS42 Katsu.

CYCA Members Place Well in Sydney Short Ocean Racing Champioship

After yesterday's two wins from three races and a punishing night sail in atrocious conditions including lightning and rain squalls, the Julian Freeman helmed Wot Now lost none of its momentum on the race track today, winning two from three and beating Syd Fischer's near sistership Ragamuffin by eight points once the final results for the six-race series were tallied.

Conditions for day one of the two-day Championship were fluky with plenty of south to south east puff out of Rose Bay for the passage race start at midday, while the IRC fleets offshore found themselves languishing in an uncomfortable chop and an easing breeze that was clocking left then right midway through race 2.

Those seas and wind against current will pose the first major tactical decision for skippers - whether to head offshore to find the northerly current that acts as a sort of conveyor belt south, but at the cost of pounding into steeper, bigger waves which can damage the boat, or to stay inshore where the waves should not be as steep.

 For Paul Clitheroe, owner of Balance, he had rolled the dice on Saturday afternoon and took the decision to go wide, with the next roll being when to come back inshore. Offshore, Balance was sailing along quite nicely and maintaining good boat speed before getting caught in the thunderstorms.
"That was one of the most intense thunderstorms I have seen in a long time, said Paul. "The lightening lit up the night sky - but being in the middle of a lightening & thunderstorm with an aluminium mast is something that when it hits - you know that it's one place that you don't want to be and it's paramount to ensure crew safety."

 Ray Roberts recalled their race upon setting his feet on dry land "It was a fantastic but tough race. We had a pretty good start and were in a good position with Quest and Ragamuffin (the early leaders off the start line) and Yendys.
